Govt. aims to promote the country into a developed and prosperous one by 2041 and to achieve the targets mentioned in the Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) in the 8th Five Year Plan (2021-25) to increase fisheries production, create employment, socio-economic development of fishermen, fish and fish products export markets, expansion, ensuring safe fish production and optimum productivity, establishment and maintenance of fish sanctuaries and protected areas in eco-sensitive areas, development and management of hilsa resources, stocking and sustainable harvesting to develop the potential of the blue economy and value change development of fish and fish products.
In 2021-22, the total fish production was 47.59 lakh MT which is 55.42 percent higher than the total production of 2010-11 (30.62 lakh MT). The Fisheries sector contributes 2.43 percent of the country’s total GDP and 22.14 percent of the agricultural GDP (BER, 2023).
There are 260 freshwater fish species and 12 exotic fish species (DoF, 2023). In the total financial year 2021-22, 27.71 lakh MT of fish has been produced through culture from closed reservoirs which is 42.61 percent of the total fish production.
According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s ‘The State World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2022’ report, Bangladesh rank’s 3rd in inland open water fish production and 5th in closed water cultured fish production. In addition, Bangladesh ranks 4th in the world in tilapia production and 1st among the 11 countries that produce Hilsa in the world.
